Abstract

The objective was to investigate the expression of the issue of compulsory sterilization in Canada in the first decades of the 20th century. The study was based on Canadian literature, from texts and authors who dealt with the subject in the respective period, available in Érudit database, archives from the Université de Montréal library and in materials on the eugenicsarchives.ca website. After reading, organizing and descriptive analysis of the data, the results showed that the target audience for public policies on compulsory sterilization mainly involved people with mental illnesses, immigrants and other individuals in vulnerable situations, in the midst of crisis contexts of various types. Marked by a range of race, gender and social class, endorsed by politicians, businesspeople, intellectuals, doctors and psychologists, negative and positive eugenics practices collaborated and influenced speeches and actions, impacting the lives and reproduction of thousands of people, with laws of compulsory sterilization that lasted until the 1970s. Despite the limits of the descriptive analysis, it is concluded that, despite presenting attempts at reparation, Canadian history reveals developments and remnants of a time that mobilized residents, professionals and managers from different provinces, unified by the desire to form an ideal Canadian citizen.
