FISHING, AGING AND SOCIAL SECURITY

Abstract

As a problem in the Social Sciences, aging allows us to reflect on generational dynamics and relational ties, as well as on work, lifestyles and illness, without forgetting that ageism reproduces stereotypes marked by the intersectional axis class-race-gender under a certain society and its hegemonic culture, without neglecting the flows of globalization. Thinking about aging in artisanal fishing contexts implies discussing not only public policies based on the constitutional tripod of pension-assistance-health, but also in community relations, in the way in which social action and collective efficacy incorporate the elderly. If, on the one hand, elderly people can occupy positions of prestige, honor and wisdom, on the other hand, situations of poverty, fragility and incapacity directly affect their human dignity. The research will seek to reflect on the process of aging in artisanal fishing, both in the external dimension, that is, in the guarantee (or not) of rights by the Brazilian State, such as professional identification, social security and access to health, and in the internal, that is, the social place occupied by the elderly in communities, especially in their representative entities such as Colonies and associations. To this end, data from the Fisheries Census, carried out in 2022 by the Pescarte Environmental Education Project (PEA) was used. This work is the result of research financed by the aforementioned Project, which is a mitigation measure required by Federal Environmental Licensing, conducted by IBAMA.
