ESTERILIZAÇÃO COMPULSÓRIA E EUGENIA NO CANADÁ NO INÍCIO DO SÉCULO XX

O objetivo foi investigar a expressão do tema da esterilização compulsória no Canadá nas primeiras décadas do século XX. O estudo baseou-se em literatura canadense, a partir de textos e autores que trataram do assunto no respectivo período, disponíveis na base de dados Érudit, nos arquivos da biblioteca da Université de Montréal e em materiais do site eugenicsarchives.ca. Após leitura, organização e análise descritiva dos dados, os resultados apontaram que o público-alvo das políticas públicas de esterilização compulsória envolveu, majoritariamente, pessoas com doenças mentais, imigrantes e outros indivíduos em situação de vulnerabilidade, em meio a contextos de crise de diversas ordens. Marcadas por um recorte de raça, gênero e classe social, endossadas por políticos, empresários, intelectuais, médicos e psicólogos, práticas de eugenia negativa e positiva contracenaram e influenciaram discursos e ações, impactando a vida e a reprodução de milhares de pessoas, com leis de esterilização compulsória que perduraram até a década de 1970. Não obstante os limites da análise descritiva, conclui-se que, apesar de apresentar tentativas de reparação, a história canadense revela desdobramentos e resquícios de uma época que mobilizou moradores, profissionais e gestores das diversas províncias, unificados pelo anseio de formar um cidadão canadense ideal.
